Ram On LA - A Tribute To Paul McCartney’s RAM

I've never hidden the fact that the cute Beatle has always been my favorite. I guess I'm a sucker for silly love songs. Lennon was too serious for this romantic.

George Carlin: Class Clown

Remembering Mr. Conductor

George Carlin - Class Clown - altobelliI was very sad to hear that George Carlin passed away. He may not be on my top-ten list of comedy influences but I would say he has a special place in my funny bone. Carlin's 1972 landmark recording, Class Clown, was the first comedy album I ever owned. Actually, it was a cassette that I had recorded by placing my tape deck up against a speaker at Michael Carty's house. His older brothers, Joe and Tom, owned the album and Michael and I stole the album to so we could record it. The big attraction, of course, was Carlin's Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television. As funny as that bit was - Michael and I found Carlin's routines about attending Catholic grade school even funnier. Carlin's observations about God, confession, nuns, and the bible were dead on and - as two Catholic school students - Michael and I never laughed so hard.

Over the years Carlin's style of comedy changed. He was one of the few comedians who was not afraid to say what was on his mind and most of the time, I found that I agreed with him.

Rest in peace George Carlin and thank you for turning me on to the bilabial fricative.

Enjoy George Carlin's Class Clown.

T.U.B.E.

The Ultimate Bootleg Experience

The Ultimate Bootleg Experience - T.U.B.E.
I've never been one to listen or seek out "bootleg" recordings. For most of my life bootleg recordings have always been audience recordings or 4th generation studio recordings with so much background hiss you could hardly hear the music. But that was then and now through technology and the internet excellent sounding "boots" are turning up all over the place. Websites such as The Ultimate Bootleg Experience (T.U.B.E.), The Undertow, and Nargo The Borts Deviant Subculture (Tony the Tiger) are posting the best sounding boots I've ever heard. The best part of the deal is that they're free to download.

Tony the Tiger:
Feel free to download and repost elsewhere. I don't own any of these shows. Unless that is you playing lead guitar, you don't own the shows either. I always download, usually tweak the files in some way adding track numbers and track names, and reup. So, thanks to all of you for the music I have snarfed. If you believe I have posted something from your site, let me know and I will put a link in for you. Otherwise, take what you want and leave the rest. Any post at a 320 bit rate was probably in a lossless format originally. I converted to MP3 adding track names, track numbers, etc. then repackaged it. Share it! Repost!
If you're looking for something different from your favorite bands check out any of the above sites and download something live or unreleased.

I love the internet.

Here's one of my favorite unreleased treasures.

Happy 4th of July America!

100 Great Southern Rock Songs

Nuthin' defines America more than southern rock. This music, America's rock and roll, is what I like to listen to on July 4th. My Brush With Greatness

I Shook Hands With God

Eric Clapton, April 6, 2007A few days ago I was in New York City. My friend Suzanne and I decided to grab a drink at the Four Seasons. As I opened the door a man walked out. As our eyes met I realized it was Eric Clapton. Now, I've met a lot of rock stars that 100 years from now nobody will ever remember (Dee Synder, Meatloaf, and Joan Jett to name just a few). But Eric is different. He's, in my mind, rock royalty. He can be mentioned in the same breath with The Beatles, Stones, The Who, and Zeppelin. I can only think of one other solo artist that is close to Clapton's stature - Neil Young. Dare I say, Lou Reed and Bruce Springsteen aren't in the Clapton's league.

As Eric walked out I immediately recognized him and said, "Um. Hi, how are you?" as if we've known each other for years. I stuck my hand out and as he shook it he said, "how are you?" We both then turned and as I walked into the hotel he stepped his limo. Eric was leaving to attend the "Ahmet Ertegun: A Celebration" private memorial service. Ertegun, the chairman of Atlantic Records, died on Dec. 14 at 83. Clapton, leading a band that included the New Orleans pianist Dr. John, played two songs that he said Mr. Ertegun always sang when they would get drunk together: Percy Mayfield’s “Please Send Me Someone To Love,” a prayer for romance and world peace, and Stick McGhee’s “Drinkin’ Wine Spo-dee-o-dee,” the single that got Atlantic Records off the ground.

To wrap up this post I want to comment on why I wrote "I Shook Hands With God." Back in the mid-sixties when Eric first rose to prominence the phrase “Clapton is God” was spray painted on a wall in the Underground station in Islington in the mid-60s by an admirer.

The graffiti was captured in a now-famous photograph. Helped by the photo, the legend grew. It is now commonly believed that graffiti proclaiming “Clapton is God” could be seen all over the walls of the London Underground system during the mid- to late-60s.

That may be the story. But, here's why I believe Clapton is God. Enjoy.

Tom Sawyer

Tom SawyerFile this one under strange but true. Here's a madcap chopped-out piano trio jam version of Rush's Tom Sawyer by The Bad Plus. My (Easter) Morning Song

Easter 2006

Today I started off my morning on the treadmill listening to The Black Crowes. Their 1992 sophmore effort, The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion, is, what I feel, a perfect album. And from this album comes My Morning Song. It's a song that mentions Easter Sunday but really doesn't have anything to do with Easter Sunday. Nonetheless, I leave you with the studio and the extended live version of My Morning Song. Happy Easter.

elbo.ws is too cool for school

The internet is a Beautiful Thing

Everyday there is a new reason why I love the internet. Today its a website called Elbows (http://elbo.ws). According to the website, "Elbows is a collection of great music blog posts and is meant to provide you a snapshot of what's going on in this new genre of blogging." The "snapshot" is almost instantaneous. It seems that every credible mp3 blog is feed into this music blog aggregator so each time you view the Elbows' home page you'll see new posts about some new band or music happening. Check out Elbows.

Wilco: Sky Blue Sky

I love the Internet!

Wilco - Sky Blue Sky - altobelliQuick story: A few weeks back I discovered a very cool program called Peel. This program allows you to subscribe to mp3 blogs around the web and get notified when new music becomes available. Even better, Peel allows you to stream this the music and download it to iTunes with a click of a button. I can't remember when I listened to so much good new music. Well, it was through this tool that I discovered that there was a new Wilco album about to be released and that some of the songs were now available via mp3 blogs around the web. As I surfed around I was able to visit 10 or so mp3 blogs and ultimately listen and download the entire album months in advance of its release!

What is cool about Wilco is that I enjoy their music a little bit more every time I listen to them. That's how it was listening to this new album. Each time I listen to Sky Blue Sky I like it more.Sky Blue Sky is such a happy, easy listen. One can't help but smile while listening to this album.

I'll leave you with two of my favorite tracks: "Walken", a lively honky tonk that my kids love to dance to and "On and On and On," a beautiful, simple song that gets you singing along with the chorus halfway into the tune. Enjoy.

"...the greatest love post of the last fifty years?"

Thinking of Lisa

Lisa and Paul AltobelliLast year I submitted a post about what Frank Sinatra called the "greatest love song of the last fifty years." The song, of course, was George Harrison's "Something." It's a beautiful song written for his love, Patti Boyd Harrison, yet not one of my favorites. When I decided to write this post I thought about what I considered my favorite love song. Immediately I thought of the Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell Motown classic "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." I thought a little more and came up with the song my Lisa and I danced to at our wedding, Elvis Presley's "I Love You Because." Then I remembered "(We're Not) The Jet Set" by John Prine and Iris DeMent. I like their cover much more than the George Jones / Tammy Wynette original. And speaking of covers -- I LOVE Aimee Mann & Michael Penn's version of "Two of Us."

So, much in the way George Harrison thought about his wife to write "Something" I'm thinking about my wife as I write this post. Happy Valentine's Day Lisa. I love you.

Beatles "Love"

Within You Without You / Tomorrow Never Knows

Beatles Love - altobelliI listened to the "new" Beatles release today titled "Love." Since the Beatles haven't officially recorded as a band since 1969 I was under the impression that this release was same wine different bottle. I was way wrong.

Love begins with a twittering of birdsong lifted from "Across the Universe." And once the triple-tracked a capella harmonies of "Because" enter, followed by snatches from "A Hard Day's Night" and "The End," leading into a fired-up "Get Back," it became obvious that this was far more than just another Beatles compilation. Now, there's no new Beatles material per se, but the songs are all approached differently--some are cut together in a flawlessly mixed medley, some reassemble different backing tracks and vocal performances to create new spins on old classics; but all the songs are revitalized considerably. Case in point...
Now you may say, "why mess with perfection?" Well, why not? Especially, if the Beatles are backing the idea and their old producer George Martin is behind the controls. That said, I don't know if I would recommend this to brand new Beatles fan. This album is for the folks who really know the music. They're the ones who'll really appreciate this for its creativity.

Moving Forward in 2007

This website is about to go through a change in the next few weeks. I'm switching hosting companies and building a new template for this blog and the other pages associated with this site (resume, bio, contact, and a portfolio page). As I sat down to plan my attack for this project I reached for a piece of paper and started to write. Then I said, "wait a minute - I should post this." So in the words of the great Otis Day, "here it tis."
  1. Sign up with Bluehost
  2. Move site from Fatcow to Bluehost
  3. Switch Blogger template to classic
  4. Finish new template design
  5. Build out template
  6. Test new template
  7. Build out old pages (resume, bio, contact, and a portfolio page) using new template
  8. Organize old root file directory (including archived sites)
  9. Go live
I'm shooting for an ambitious March 1st launch date. Let's see what happens. I'll leave you with my new "Screamer of the Week." I heard this song the other day and it really blew me away. It's a fun little song that drips with cheeky attitude. Enjoy.

James Brown - The Godfather, Gone

Christmas 2006 - The Day The Funk Stood Still

James Brown was - hands-down - one of the most important musical forces of the last 100 years in how he transformed the literal rhythm of popular music. The ways in which he introduced new forms of syncopation and polyrhythm into the gospel, blues and jazz training of his youth lead to a revolution in sound and style within soul music. Brown didn't invent funk (no single artist did) but he transformed the sound of popular music through his funk innovations. And of course, in the process, he also created scores of samples that, a generation later, would become the bedrock upon which hip-hop was built.

For me personally he's one of my top five all time musical performers. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent listening to his music, his attitude, his beat, and his funk. It was through his music that I discovered rap/hip-hop, jazz, gospel, and disco/dance music. Before James I was nothing more than a classic rocker listening to the same three chords over and over again. To put it simply - James Brown changed my life.

Robert Christgau

The Dean of American Rock Critics

Robert ChristgauI had the privilege to work with Robert Christgau in 2001. I produced his radio program "The Dean's List" that ran weekly on The Voice. The Voice was an internet radio station I co-developed for New York City's own Village Voice.

Every week Robert would enter my studio and turn me on to some really great music. For each show Robert would have a theme of some sort, country, hip-hop, bluegrass, African, really old scratchy blues, and occasionally rock and roll. Producing this show with Robert was like going to school every week. I learned so much in such a short period of time. Aside from the world blowing up sixteen or so blocks away from our office, 2001 was one of the best years of my life partly because I got to hang out and talk music with The Dean of American Rock Critics, Robert Christgau.

Recently I discovered some promos Robert recorded for his show. They are each about twenty seconds in length and you'll hear Robert answer questions about...what else...music.

Charlie Rich

A recent email from my brother...

charlie rich - altobelliYou know much about him? Well, in a nutshell, he's pretty mindblowing. When he showed up at Sun Records in ‘57, he was groomed to be Elvis’s replacement. Unfortunately, he had too much talent and variety to channel properly and he got lost in the mix. He could write and play gospel, jazz, swing, country, and rockabilly, yet was marketed poorly time and again. By the late 60s he hooked up with producer Billy Sherrill, the Phil Spector-like producer who was creating the Countrypolitan sound with artists like Tammy Wynette. The first couple of LPs Rich and Sherrill did together didn’t sell well—tho they did well critically (Rich may be rock’s first “critic’s darling”)--and by 1971 he was playing airport bars, going nowhere. Music journalist Peter Guralnick profiled him during this period, in a book of essays called “Feel Like Going Home.”

Shortly thereafter, Rich did “Behind Closed Doors” and finally became an overnite sensation. Shortly before he died in 1991, he recorded his final LP, “Pictures and Portraits,” which Guralnick produced (they remained friends over those 20 years). Rich, inspired by the book that in part helped revive his career, wrote a song called “Feel Like Going Home.” Here’s his demo, which is breathtaking. It’s full of grunts and chair squeaks and it’s just Charlie and his piano. Wow.

I’m so glad my boy Harry Mose will grow up in a home where this beautiful music will play loud and clear.
